Fleas don’t play the game fair, as only 5% of a total flea population are found on your pet at any given time. Therefore unless you treat all areas where your pet frequents you are almost guaranteed to have those pesky little jumpers return.
I hear you shouting out ‘How long is that going to take, can’t I just give my pet a bath and shampoo - after all giving it a bath is bad enough’. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but if that is all you do, almost invariable as soon as your pet returns to their favorite spot which also happens to also be a fleas favorite spot, those darn pesky little black things will jump straight back onto your pet.
I have some more bad news - you can’t stretch the ‘de-flea’ out over a period of several days. It has to be done on the same day, otherwise ‘were jumping straight back on’ to continue to torment your pets along with you before you have the chance to eliminate all fleas.
Now I hear you let out a big sigh and exclaim ‘all right you have talked me into it, what do I have to do’?
First thing you have to do - put your workin clothes on. Next thing - like most pets, fleas hate water and in fact cannot survive being submerged in water, so you will need to wash your pet and its bedding with a good quality Flea & Tick Shampoo
Spraying your pet with a Flea & Tick Mist will help control fleas on your pet.
Next you need to spray all the Carpet & Upholstery where your pet visits. Now the important bit - you will need to vacuum the house thoroughly. The larvae are found in carpet, floorboard cracks, under rugs, in crevices and along baseboards. The larvae avoid sunlight so you have to be diligent in seeking them with your vacuum. Oh and don't forget to dispose of the vacuum bag after you have finished. The adult fleas don't give up easily, and just might find their way out of the bag if not disposed of properly.
Next you must spray a good quality Yard Spray around all the areas that your pet frequents whilst outside (you may need to reach a compromise here if you own a large ranch!!). Sand and gravel are ideal places for flea development, so if you pet lays in the dirt, sand or gravel - chances are there will be fleas close by.
Fleas prefer the warmer weather and higher humidity. Concentrate your efforts on the darker places around the yard, and under the house.
So in summary -
- Wash you pet and its bedding.
- Vacuum the house, paying particular attention to any cracks or carpet where the larvae may be located.
- Spray outside areas with a good quality insecticide, especially sand, dust and gravel where your pet may frequent.
This will eliminate fleas from your house and pet because it breaks the life cycle of the flea, and you won't suffer a re infestation a couple of weeks after you have treated your pet.
To eliminate fleas you need to buy some product. Sorry about bringing more bad news but they do not just disappear of their own accord after a week or so, and it is a darn frustrating job trying to catch those little suckers - can they jump. If you don’t eliminate them - not only will they jump all over your house, they will increase in numbers very quickly. The only truly successful way to eliminate fleas completely is to treat all areas where your pet frequents.
